Brian Drake is hit by a lorry on the way to work and can no longer work. As a result he sets off to become a hermit only to be joined by various other outcasts (a bit like "The Outlaw Josie Wales") and is followed by a private detective working for his wife. He too is an outcast and so joins the group.
