Based on the novel by Belva Plain, covering a time span from 1909 to 1959. The story begins in New York’s Lower East Side with the arrival of Polish-Jewish immigrant Anna (Lesley Ann Warren). At first employed as a humble seamstress, Anna is whisked into a whole new world when she becomes the wife of the enterprising Joseph Friedman (Armand Assante), who eventually becomes a wealthy Westchester contractor. Even so, Anna’s heart belongs to Paul Lerner (Ian McShane), the son of the prosperous Fifth Avenue family which employs her relatives. In 1918, Anna gives birth to Paul’s daughter, allowing Joseph to believe that he is the father. The secret surrounding Anna’s child will lead to a daunting and frequently heartbreaking chain of events, culminating decades later in the newly formed state of Israel, where Anna’s grandson Eric hopes to "find himself" — and ends up finding more than he bargained for.

The Earth Star Voyager is a spaceship sent to another solar system to prepare it for colonization. Earth itself is horribly polluted, so the mission is vitally important. But as the departing starship gets under way, signs begin to emerge that their mission may unwittingly be part of a larger conspiracy.
In 2088, when the Earth is heavily polluted and the atmosphere is becoming unbreathable, title starship is launched to investigate whether a planet in a solar system some eighteen light years from Earth would be suitable as a new home for the human race, which would migrate there en mass, a process that would take several decades, as forty years would be required to build the fleet of starships needed. This planet, called Demeter (the Greek goddess of corn, grain and the harvest) was discovered by an earlier mission which took some fuzzy video footage and sent it back to Earth before vanishing without trace. As the round trip would take twenty-five years at near-light speed, many of the crew members that have been selected are teens and young adults. In many ways their voyage is a leap into the unknown as their mission is plagued by a host of problems shortly after they leave Earth behind.

John Monroe observes and comments on life, to the bemusement of his sensible wife Ellen (Joan Hotchkis) and intelligent, questioning daughter Lydia (Lisa Gerritsen). Monroe’s frequent daydreams and fantasies are usually based on material from New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber. It took several tries before the life and work of James Thurber was successfully adapted into a weekly television series. Two failed pilots, broadcast in 1959 and 1961, eventually led to NBC scheduling My World and Welcome to It on Mondays for the 1969-1970 season. The sitcom starred William Windom as John Monroe [the character based on James Thurber] and featured a combination of live action and animation. Despite many positive reviews, moderate Nielsen ratings led NBC to cancel the series after one season. It then won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Comedy Series.
